Name: Michelle Polson Age:52 From: Born in Iowa – MI is the 7th state I’ve lived in
How long have you been with CrossFit Torrent and what made you decide to start?
I signed up soon after Torrent started taking members. After talking with Callie as she was going through her coach training with Brian at Tides I knew that the programming, coaching, and community at Torrent was just what I needed.
What do you do when you’re not at CFT?
I work in the apparel industry, which I love. I do crazy events like Spartan and Ragnar Relay, drink wine with friends and feed all the cats in my neighborhood along with my 2 fat cats.
When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?
I’d say I realized it when I found myself with an amazing group of friends to workout with and hang out with. The physical results are great, but people I’ve met are even better.
What were your thoughts after your first WOD?
I was amazed I made it through! I think there were wall balls and push-ups, it’s a bit hazy.
What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?
Deadlifts are my favorite lift and it’s a 3-way tie between lunges, wallballs, and Assault Bike for least favorite.
What motivates you during a tough workout?
Reminding myself to take it one movement, one rep, one step at a time and that being last is ok sometimes.
What’s your favorite thing about CrossFit?
The community – I couldn’t do it without the energy and support in the classes.
What are your short term and long term goals?
My short term goals are to improve my technique and correct some bad habits that I have developed. Long-term to improve my strength and work toward doing 1-2 WODs a week RX (I get really excited when I can click that button on Wodify).
How have you seen yourself change- mentally and physically since joining Torrent? What impact has CFT had on you in and out of the gym?
I’ve been dealing with some neck and shoulder issues, so I’ve had to focus on being patient, working on proper form, and finding ways to scale with the help of Callie and Morgan.CrossFit, in general, has definitely helped me be mentally stronger. It changes your inner dialogue. I tell myself if I can lift a 100# barbell over my head, I can deal with just about anything.
Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFT?
CrossFit is for everyone! I didn’t pick up a barbell until I was in my 40’s. Go at your own pace. Laugh and have fun!

Coach’s comment: Michelle is an absolute dream to have as part of the Torrent Family. She was one of the first members to sign up and has been an advocate for us since day one. She is very welcoming to new members and is a person who would do whatever she could to help someone else. Michelle came to us with an injury but she doesn’t make excuses and shows up every day, scales appropriately, and puts in work to correct her movement pattern. She is also a great example of using fitness outside of the gym. This year she completed a BEAST Spartan Race, 10k and a Ragnar Relay just to name a few. Michelle is one of the best people you will meet and completely deserving of our first athlete of the month!
