How long have you been with CrossFit Torrent and what made you decide to start?
I’ve been with CrossFit Torrent for 7 months now! I decided to join CrossFit mostly because I wanted a fun way to workout. I used to work out on my own by running and doing some weightlifting, but I can’t say I truly enjoyed working out, nor did I have any goals I was working toward. CrossFit seemed like a perfect option to have fun while working out and also setting goals for myself.
What do you do when you’re not at CFT?
I’m a medical student, so I spend most of my days in hospitals or clinics, learning everything I can before I graduate in a year! When I’m not studying, I like trying new foods and binge-watching reality TV shows (my guilty pleasure).
When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?
I think after a week or two of classes is when I really felt like this is something I could see myself doing for as long as possible.
What were your thoughts after your first WOD?
“I definitely did not do any of that correctly, but that was fun… And hard.”
What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?
I look forward to any WOD that involves running, but I also have grown to really like cleans, and oddly enough.. burpees. My least favorite is definitely the assault bike, and I’m not the biggest fan of snatches (probably because I’m not great at them).
What is the one thing you have done at CFT that you never thought you would do?
I honestly never really looked forward to working out before starting CrossFit. Now, I’m actually excited to work out, even at 5am, and I can’t wait to see the WOD for the day.
What motivates you during a tough workout?
The incredibly talented people around me along with my competitive nature! The coaches’ encouragement always keeps me going too.
What’s your favorite thing about CrossFit?
So many things, but my favorite thing is that every day is something new. I love being challenged, and I always have something to work toward at CFT.
What are your short term and long term goals?
Short term, I’d like to be able to do pull-ups. Long term, I hope to be able to Rx more WODs and stay healthy!
How have you seen yourself change- mentally and physically since joining Torrent? What impact has CFT had on you in and out of the gym?
I have definitely seen changes since joining Torrent. Physically, my whole body is more toned and I have much more stamina (even with running less than I used to). I also feel stronger mentally. Workouts used to be daunting, and don’t get me wrong, they still are sometimes, but I now go into them knowing that I am fully capable of finishing and pushing myself to the limit.
Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFT?
It can be quite intimidating learning something totally new, especially with such talented people at CFT, but stick with it! All of the coaches are incredibly encouraging and know exactly how to help you become the best you can be. Have fun! CFT is the best, hands down.

Coaches’ comments: Not a kinder, more genuine person has walked through our doors than Alysa. She is disciplined, lets her actions speak louder than her words and is a freaking fast learner. She is humble, coachable and pushes herself every day. Even with her hectic and busy schedule, she makes time to get in and workout on a regular basis. The poem by Nikita Gill perfectly summarizes Alysa. “Never mistake her silence for weakness. Remember that sometimes the air stills, before the onset of a hurricane..” She is strong, kind, and we are excited to watch her continue to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
