Name: Kathryn Roche Age: 30 From: Minooka, Illinois
How long have you been with Torrent and what made you decide to start?
I began at Torrent in January 2020 but began this adventure two years ago in Jackson, Michigan. Being a runner and ONLY running, for so long, made me realize how important it was to also incorporate strength training.
What do you do when you’re not at Torrent? Outside of Torrent, I run and like being active. I enjoy spending my mornings drinking coffee, whether at home or in cafes, preparing German lessons or reading articles. I am in the process of moving to Germany, for at least a year, so I am currently looking for employment. I am working on my TEFEL certificate (teaching English as a second language) so that this will give me more options for work. I am always looking for the next mountain to summit. I go camping and hiking when the weather permits and I just built an at-home-pottery studio, so from time to time I like to hop on the wheel. I have an amazing boyfriend who is supportive in all aspects of life.
When did you realize this gym was right for you?
I heard about it from a runner that I knew. He talked very highly about it, but at the time, I wasn’t quite sure and had never felt comfortable in a weight room before. Knowing that it was something that my body needed, I gave it a try. It immediately felt very rewarding. Each workout makes me feel stronger than the time before. There is no greater feeling when that buzzer goes off and all you can do is lay on the ground, trying and attempting to catch your breath!
What were your thoughts after your first WOD?
All I can say was that I used a PVC pipe and was sore for days on end.
What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?
Favorite: overhead squat, snatch and the assault bike
Least favorite: deadlift and front squat (plus, for the deadlift, who wants to carry over 35lb+ weights to the barbell???)
What is the one thing you have done at Torrent that you never thought you would do?
Lift a barbell.. but hey, progress!
But honestly, all of the WODs are doable, just take it one rep at a time and give yourself some grace.
What motivates you during a tough workout? By far the coaches and everyone in class- so supportive and encouraging! I am also a very intrinsically motivated person. Knowing that there has never been a time where I regretted working out also motivates me to at least do something small each day.
What’s your favorite thing about being at Torrent?
The social aspect brings me much joy, even if we do come into contact for a short time. Working out puts my mind at ease and makes me feel better physically. I like how each WOD is different than the one before, incorporating various elements such as stability, cardio, weight lifting, gymnastics, and flexibility training! In addition, we are not just thrown into workouts.. the coaches teach the movements, talk about strategy, and practice beforehand. I also love the diversity, community, friendships, the comradery and so much more!
What are your short term and long term goals?
My short term goal is to join the 6 am crew. I’VE TRIED SO HARD!
Another is double unders. But once I become tired, which happens quickly, I start tripping over my feet…
My long term goal is to stay healthy and to always be able to lead an active lifestyle. The sedentary lifestyle does not agree with me!
How have you seen yourself change- mentally and physically since joining Torrent? What impact has this had on you in and out of the gym? Torrent allows me to lead a healthy lifestyle, mentally and physically. Knowing that I am working out that day, makes me make better decisions throughout the day, whether nutrition-based or ensuring that I get enough sleep. The sheer fact of having completed so many workouts that challenged me or made me feel nervous or anxious gives me the confidence that I can do anything. I didn’t know that my body was capable of forming muscle so that’s been a great side effect! This gym has also provided opportunities for forming friendships outside of just working out!
Do you have any advice for people just getting started at Torrent?
- Be open to learning and trying new things
- Be a helper and a teacher
- Be consistent, create a schedule that works for you
- When you think you can’t, you CAN and people will always be there supporting you.
- Give what you can, some days are harder than others, be kind to yourself.
- Ask questions, know your body- they are complex!
- Just because you can’t RX a workout or you’ve been using the same weights for a while does not mean you aren’t making progress!
- The coaches do a fantastic job teaching and explaining the movements and modifying, if necessary. You are in GREAT hands!!
