February Athlete of the Month- Leslie L.

Name:   Leslie LeBlanc    Age: 48     From: Military Brat

How long have you been with CrossFit Torrent and what made you decide to start? 

I’m a founding member of CrossFit Torrent. I was very excited to have a new CrossFit box very close to my home. It was also very exciting to get in on the ground floor of a new gym and be a part of the growth. 

 

What do you do when you’re not at CFT? 

As little as possible. 🙂 

I work a lot, travel, read, movies and cook. 

 

When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you? 

I started CrossFit in 2014. I quickly realized it was the sport for me thanks to the community. I didn’t grow up being an athlete. All of this was very new to me, but I fell in love with barbells, lifting heavy weights and how supportive the community of CrossFit is – everyone is welcome irrespective of where you are in your current capabilities. Everything can be modified or scaled. 

 

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

I was surprised I didn’t die and I was really proud of myself.

 

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

My favorite movement is very basic, it’s the ab mat sit up. My least favorite movement is the assault bike.

What is the one thing you have done at CFT that you never thought you would do?

So many things. There are workouts that are so intimidating that you think you could never finish them and yet you do. I never thought I would happily wake up at 430a and go to a class at 5a. I never thought I would be excited to work out on a Saturday. 

 

What motivates you during a tough workout? 

The people around me motivate me. Also if we are doing a Hero workout, I think of the person we are honoring and that what I am going through is nothing compared to what that person did. For example Murph. Our annual Memorial Day workout to honor Michael Murphy. Murph and others are always in my thoughts and their sacrifice is bigger than any tough aspect of a workout.

 

What’s your favorite thing about CrossFit?

I’m a total fangirl, I love CrossFit and could talk about the benefits of it but more importantly of the community that it has built. I love being able to drop into a CrossFit box when I’m traveling for work or on vacation. 

 

What are your short term and long term goals? 

Short term goal: strengthen my legs to provide more support to my knees which are impacted by osteoarthritis. 

Long term goal: to stay healthy and strong. 

 
How have you seen yourself change- mentally and physically since joining Torrent? What impact has CFT had on you in and out of the gym?

I’ve been doing CrossFit off and on since 2014. Since joining Torrent, I’ve become a much better athlete. I am more knowledgeable, more strategic in my approach to workouts which has led me to be much more efficient and effective. Out of the gym, it gives me confidence. I know I can make it through a really tough workout, I know I can take on anything the day might bring.

Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFT?

Just walking through the door can be scary and intimidating. If you don’t feel comfortable coming alone, bring a friend. Check your ego at the door. If you are just starting everything will be new and confusing. Be patient and give yourself time.

This athlete of the month is long overdue. Leslie is one of our OG members and we are so lucky to have her. She is welcoming to every new athlete, comes to every gym event and is officially our HEAD JUDGE for all the Opens and any competition we throw. Not only does she have fabulous eyelashes and finds the best memes (sorry Colin), but she also is one of the most determined athletes at Torrent. Leslie just gets it, she knows the impact health can have on your life longterm and persists in chasing a happy and healthy life every day. She has had a series of setbacks and she takes them in stride and handles them like a champion. It doesn’t matter if a WOD is programmed with all movements that are currently restricted to her, she shows up asks the coach for modifications and pushes herself just as hard. It’s really impressive. I’m also pretty certain she has PR’d her Dead Lift, Shoulder Press, Bench Press, Muscle Clean and ROWING in the last 6 months. Leslie, thanks for being you, helping create an amazing Torrent Family, and busting your butt every time you step in the gym. #BeLikeLeslie
