Name:  Emily Monacelli Guzman          Age: 32         From: Kalamazoo

How long have you been with CrossFit Torrent and what made you decide to start?

I started with CrossFit Torrent when the doors opened. I had become sick of how I looked and felt, and had finally convinced myself to make the leap to CrossFit. I liked the idea of starting with a brand new gym.

 

What do you do when you’re not at CFT?

I work as a reporter for MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette covering crime and general mayhem. I like to try new craft beer and visit new breweries with my husband Carlos. I also have to keep up with my 4-year-old son, which usually involves outdoor adventures like hiking and bike rides.

 

When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?

I was hooked from the start. I love that every day is different and challenging.

 

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

I definitely was wondering what I got myself into.

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

Favorite — any kind of heavy lifting, but especially deadlifts. Least favorite — burpees.

 

What is the one thing you have done at CFT that you never thought you would do?

Row 100,000 meters in a month!

 

What motivates you during a tough workout?

Honestly? Knowing that eventually it will be over.

 

What’s your favorite thing about CrossFit?

I love the positive atmosphere and being around a group of people who are constantly pushing themselves to be better.

 

What are your short term and long term goals?

In the short term, I want to get back to a healthy weight. I’m also still chasing a pull-up. In the long term, I want to be a happy and healthy mom and be around for a very long time to enjoy my family.


How have you seen yourself change- mentally and physically since joining Torrent? What impact has CFT had on you in and out of the gym?

I actually look forward to getting up and working out early in the morning. I’m more focused on the task at hand and I can run around and play more with my son. I have found some confidence, both in and out of the gym.

Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFT?

Just show up, even if you’re nervous or if the WOD seems impossible. Your coach will scale anything needed. You’ll be so glad you did.

Favorite CrossFit Athlete: Honestly, I don’t know anything about any of the professional CrossFit athletes, but I’m a big fan of all of the CrossFit Torrent athletes who prioritize their health each day while also managing full-time jobs, full school schedules and families.

Coach’s comment: 

Emily is an absolute gem. She joined the Torrent fam as one of our Founding Members and has been jumping head first into all things Torrent, like bento boxes, Concept2 holiday rowing challenge, and 800g nutrition challenge to name a few. Emily is a working mom but she doesn’t make excuses and gets into the gym every day. You will typically find Emily in the 5 a.m. class throwing down with the boys or 6:30 p.m. with her new gym bestie, Ali. Emily, from all of the coaches: we are so proud of you, keep working hard we can’t wait to see what 2019 has in store for you!
