Athlete of the Month- Julie L

Name: Juliane Locker    Age: Old. (36)       From: East side of MI but lived in KZ half my life

How long have you been with CrossFit Torrent and what made you decide to start?

7 months- I had plateaued as an athlete and was really looking for quality coaching to keep things progressing

What do you do when you’re not at CFT?

LOTS! I work fulltime as a Specialty Senior Executive Neurosciences Pharmaceutical Representative and Field Sales Supervisor, I have an awesome husband who owns and operates Kalamazoo Maple Company – so I help him with his business (collecting, cooking, bottling maple syrup), we have the world’s greatest kids- Lillian 10 and Benjamin 6, we live on an 18-acre hobby farm and have a massive massive garden. We love to take camping vacations, road trips, and any outdoor adventures!

When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?

My sister is annoyingly fit. She always has been. She BEGGED me to start CF even though she lives across the state and could never physically drag me into the gym herself. I finally caved and tried a class. The moment I could not even walk down the stairs to change laundry because my legs were so brutally sore from my first workout was the day I knew CF was for me lol. It took me a week to recover, but I returned the next Saturday to officially sign up!

unnamedWhat were your thoughts after your first WOD?

Holy-friggin-out-of-shape.

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

Favorite: Thrusters and Double Unders (and pullups, cleans, snatches, burpees, rowing, assault bike, DB snatches, KB swings, TTB, barbell cycling…)

Least Fave: Calculating the weight on my barbell…

(Also HSPU because I think it’s crazy to put that much strain on your neck and spine.)

What is the one thing you have done at CFT that you never thought you would do?

Never thought I would miss the assault bike, yet here we are.

What motivates you during a tough workout?

I love knowing I pushed as hard as I could. I like the feeling of accomplishment post-wod. I also like to know my previous times/reps so I can beat my own scores (*coughcoughFelipe*). It keeps me coming back for more.

What’s your favorite thing about CrossFit?

The constant self-improvement, the push of peers, the culture, the comradery, the community, the coaching, the accountability… I friggin love my 5 am (and 6 am!) crew!

What are your short term and long term goals?

I’d like to get Bar Muscle Ups again. Those disappeared on me a few months ago and Morgan worked so hard to teach me! I’ve never done a Ring Mup so that would be amazing and handstand walks! No timeline on any of these.

How have you seen yourself change- mentally and physically since joining Torrent? What impact has CFT had on you in and out of the gym?

SO MANY changes thanks to CFT. I am so much more confident with overhead lifts, clean pulls, WOD strategies, plus I have significantly improved on the rower and assault bike thanks to the tremendous coaching!

Mentally- working out first thing in the morning is THE greatest start to the day. I feel so accomplished before 7 am and it just sets the tone for the whole day. It also encourages so many positive nutrition decisions for the remainder of the day! Additionally, staying active and eating clean sets such a great example for my family. My little ones already eat so well and are both very active in multiple sports (including CrossFit)!

Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFT?

Just. Try. A. Class!!!unnamed-4

Coaches’ comment: Julie is such a fun athlete to coach because she ALWAYS wants to be better. You could tell her that she did a million things wrong in her snatch and then you will see her working on progressions for the next month to fix those issues. It is crazy how much her technique has improved due to her hard work in the short time she has been with us! Julie has some sort of superpower when it comes to barbell cycling and double unders, levitation is what we are all thinking. She’s a member that leads by example and helps make everyone feel welcome. She’s supportive and encouraging no matter where you are in your fitness journey. She is also an amazing Mom! She sets a healthy example for her kiddos and encourages them to participate in classes and clinics. We are so happy she decided to join the Torrent Family 🙂
